About Money relics

Welcome to Money relics; my blog about the fascinating world of banknotes. My name is Denis, by profession, I am a scientist—a role that indulges my curiosity and analytical mind. Yet, outside of work, one of my passion lies in collecting banknotes. For two decades, I’ve devoted time to building a collection that now boasts over 200 unique pieces of paper currency. Each note tells a story—a snapshot of the culture, history, and technological ingenuity of its place and time.

This blog is my way of sharing that passion with you. It’s a platform to explore the currency of the world not just as a representation of economic value, but as pieces of art, historical documents, and marvels of design and security. Along the way, I’ll showcase insights into the origins of banknotes, their intriguing features, and the cultural narratives they encapsulate.

But this isn’t just a celebration of banknotes—there’s also a pressing story to tell about how and why their role in society is changing. The use of physical money is rapidly declining in favor of credit cards, cryptocurrencies, and other digital payment methods. Furthermore, we’re witnessing monetary unions, like the European Union, gradually eroding the diversity of banknote designs. These shifts are fascinating, and they provide the perfect backdrop for deeper reflection on what makes these objects worth preserving and cherishing.

Stay with me as we look closely at banknotes—at their past, their present, and where they might be headed next.

Why Banknotes Matter

At first glance, a banknote might just look like a piece of paper. But if you take a closer look, you’ll notice that it’s much more than that. Banknotes represent the spirit of a nation. The leaders, events, natural wonders, animals, and even abstract art featured on these notes are symbolic of the identity each country wishes to present to the world. Every detail—from the intricate patterns to the choice of colors—tells a story about the values and culture of a place.
Take, for example, Bhutan’s Ngultrum, featuring images of the snow-capped Himalayas alongside Buddhist symbols. It reflects the importance of spirituality and ecological harmony to Bhutanese culture. Or consider the Euro, which cleverly avoids depicting any specific historical figures or landmarks, in favor of symbols of unity among nations.
Banknotes are also a window into history. Some of the notes in my collection date back to periods of immense political upheaval and change, such as recent hyperinflation in Zimbabwe and Venezuela. These notes aren’t just objects; they are silent witnesses to pivotal moments in human history.

The Evolving Role of Banknotes

Despite their beauty and historic significance, the role of banknotes in modern society is being transformed, if not diminished altogether. With the rise of digital payment platforms -Venmo, Cash app, Zelle, and Paypal, the percentage of transactions conducted with cash is shrinking every year. Data shows a steady decline in cash usage around the world, as more people transition to the convenience of credit cards, payment apps, and cryptocurrencies.
At the same time, monetary unions are consolidating currencies, leading to a decrease in diversity among banknotes. The Euro is a prime example, replacing dozens of currencies that once showcased unique national histories and cultures. While monetary unions make commerce more efficient, they limit the artistic and cultural diversity once prevalent in banknotes worldwide.
This blog will not only celebrate banknotes but also reflect on what we lose when physical money becomes obsolete. What happens to local identity when one’s currency no longer reflects it? What will future generations miss out on when banknotes are replaced by purely digital currencies with no story to tell? These are some of the questions I hope to explore with you.
